‘Colombo Port’s development up from 35% to 65% in one year’
Ports and Civil Aviation Minister Anura Karunathilaka told Parliament yesterday that the development of the Colombo Port has been increased from 35 percent to 65.8 percent within one year of the current Government coming to power.
“Work on the Eastern Terminal (ECT) can be completed by next September expecting to add 2.5 million TEUs to the current capacity of 7.78 million. The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) aims to surpass 9 million TEUs in 2025,” the Minister said.
“The net profit after tax was Rs. 39,914 million thus far in 2025. This is a 54 percent increase compared to the Rs. 22,688 million profit recorded in the same period in 2024.
“Efficiency and operational capacity at the Colombo Port are being increased through the development of new terminals like the West Container Terminal (WCT) and East Container Terminal. These expansions, along with other projects, are expected to more than double the port’s capacity to 15 million TEUs by 2026 and are aimed at strengthening the Colombo Port’s position as a major regional hub.
“India will provide a grant of Rs.63.5 million to Sri Lanka to develop the Kankesanturai (KKS) Port. The grant, confirmed in March 2024, will fund the port’s full development, including the construction of a new breakwater and dredging of the harbour to a depth of 30 metres.”
