Customs records highest-ever monthly revenue in September

Sri Lanka Customs has recorded its highest-ever monthly revenue in September 2025, collecting Rs. 253.15 billion, according to the Customs Department. This marks a 74.6% increase compared to September 2024, when revenue stood at Rs. 144.97 billion.
The significant growth in customs revenue comes amid improved trade performance and stronger export activity. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s trade deficit narrowed to USD 414.2 million in August 2025, down from USD 422.3 million in the same month last year, driven by higher exports.
According to the Central Bank, exports rose by 4.1%, while imports increased by 2.6% during the same period, contributing to the narrowing of the trade deficit.
The record customs revenue reflects ongoing efforts by the Sri Lanka Customs Department to improve collection efficiency and strengthen trade monitoring. Analysts say the growth in revenue and the moderation of the trade deficit signal positive momentum in Sri Lanka’s external sector, despite global economic uncertainties.
