Karachi port charges reduced 50% in bid to promote eco-friendly maritime trade

The revised tariff structure eliminates the previously anticipated 5% annual fee hike and slashes costs across key port services—including handling, vessel operations, and storage.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, has unveiled a sweeping 50% reduction in charges at Karachi Port, targeting a dual goal of lowering trade logistics costs and advancing sustainable shipping practices. This bold initiative forms part of Pakistan’s larger mission to modernize its maritime infrastructure while minimizing environmental impact.
The revised tariff structure eliminates the previously anticipated 5% annual fee hike and slashes costs across key port services—including handling, vessel operations, and storage. Officials anticipate these reforms will accelerate port turnaround times, ease congestion, and offer substantial benefits to dry bulk exporters, all while promoting low-emission maritime operations in line with global climate standards.
Karachi Port, one of Pakistan’s largest and most active deep-water seaports, plays a central role in the nation’s trade ecosystem—managing a substantial portion of import-export operations. Recent reforms aim to boost its operational efficiency and transform it into a key regional center for environmentally sustainable maritime activity.
The move builds on a series of modernization efforts by the Ministry for Maritime Affairs, including the establishment of a high-level committee tasked with slashing container dwell times by 70%. The ministry has also embraced cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence and drones to streamline port monitoring and logistics, signalling a broader commitment to smart, climate-forward infrastructure.
