Port City Colombo deploys heavy machinery to Central Province

Colombo, Dec. 4 (Daily Mirror) - CHEC Port City Colombo (Pvt) Ltd. has deployed its full fleet of disaster-response machinery to the Central Province within 24 hours of committing support, as Sri Lanka continues efforts to restore access and critical infrastructure following Cyclone Ditwah.
The company has mobilised 12 heavy-duty machines along with a specialised engineering team to assist road clearance, slope stabilisation, and damaged infrastructure restoration along the A5 route from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya — one of the key transport corridors currently disrupted, hindering supply deliveries and access to affected communities.
“At a time when every hour matters, our priority is to move quickly and responsibly. This deployment is not symbolic — it is operational, immediate, and designed to restore access, reopen lifelines, and support communities in distress,” said CHEC Port City Colombo Managing Director Xiong Hongfeng.
The machinery was officially handed over to the Sri Lanka Army by Hongfeng, in the presence of Senior Additional Secretary to the President, Russel Aponsu. The handover, facilitated by the Colombo Port City Economic Commission, marked the commencement of operations.
The fleet includes excavators, backhoes, loaders, flatbed trucks, and dump trucks, now operating under national disaster management guidance. Engineering teams from the company will continue to provide on-ground support to expedite reopening of the A5 route for emergency services and essential supplies.
This mobilisation follows CHEC Port City Colombo’s Rs. 10 million contribution to the Government’s ‘Rebuilding Sri Lanka’ Fund, alongside an additional Rs. 3 million raised jointly with China Harbour Engineering Company’s regional office. The company has also pledged technical expertise for emergency bridge repairs, road reconstruction, and engineering assessments to assist national recovery efforts.
