Sri Lanka plans to call investors for West Container Terminal 2 by August 2026
Sri Lanka plans to call investors for a new container terminal next year to continue to add capacity as terminals under construction are completed, Deputy Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Janitha Ruwan Kodithuwakku said.
The Adani-John Keells (West Container Terminal 1) and Sri Lanka Ports Authority controlled East Container Terminal is also expected to be completed in 2026.
“But do we stop there?,” Deputy Minister Kodithuwakku said. “We have to continue this momentum if we are to take on the regional volume.
“As soon as we came we started the detailed designs of WCT 2. We expect to call Expressions of Interest for WCT2 investors by August 2026 based on the interim report of the detailed designs.
Sri Lanka Ports Authority is also conducting a feasibility study for Colombo North Port, he said.
Colombo Port is operating close to its capacity of 8 million twenty foot equivalent units now, Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Anura Karunathilaka said.
The East Container Terminal quay wall and yard is being built and the terminal is expected to be fully operational by September 2026, he said.
The ECT will add 2.5 million TEUs to Colombo’s capacity.
At the moment ECT can accommodate two ships. In 2026, with a tender for straddle carriers being delayed due to tender cancellations operations will continue with prime movers, Karunathilaka said.
