SriLankan receives IATA certification on Lithium batteries in large quantity

SriLankan Airlines has received IATA certification on Lithium batteries transportation in its cargo in large quantities and the national carrier expects to boost the electronic goods business, a top official said.
SriLankan has been increasingly focusing on air cargo business since 2020 when its business plummeted in the face of Covid-19 pandemic.
“This is the first step of our journey. We are planning to get certification to carry live animals in the future,” Chaminda Perera, Head of SriLankan Cargo told reporters.
He said the move was to exploit the opportunity in e-commerce in global trade.
The electric trade accounts for $1 trillion globally and a third of the value is contributed through air cargoes, he said.
Perera said the national carrier has increased its capacity to handle 300 cargoes now and it now has the capacity to handle 500.
The cargo business contributed 12 percent of the group’s revenue last year with a 72 percent load factor, which is higher than IATA’s 50 percent, he said.
