Third berth commissioned at Colombo East Container Terminal

The Colombo East Container Terminal, operated by Sri Lanka Ports Authority, has marked a significant operational milestone with the commissioning of its third berth, increasing total berth length to 1,096 m and strengthening container handling capacity at one of South Asia’s key maritime trade hubs.
In 2025, Colombo East Container Terminal handled more than 500,000 TEU despite operating with incomplete infrastructure for part of the year. With the third berth now fully operational, throughput volumes are expected to accelerate further in 2026, as expanded berth capacity enables the vermin al to accommodate more vessel callas and improve container handling efficiency.
The additional berth is also expected to ease congestion across the wider port, enhance terminal productivity and reduce vessel turnaround times, strengthening Colombo’s competitiveness as a regional transshipment hub and container shipping gateway.
