Hapag-Lloyd hikes freight tariffs on India–Pakistan to Europe trade
Hapag-Lloyd has moved to raise ocean freight tariffs on cargo moving from India and Pakistan to European ports, pointing to evolving market dynamics and mounting operating expenses.
The German container carrier said the revised pricing will cover multiple European destinations and will be implemented on sailings in the coming weeks, in line with existing contractual terms and applicable surcharges.
The adjustment comes as shipping lines continue to grapple with cost inflation across fuel, vessel operations, port handling and network reconfigurations. Market participants note that cargo flows on the India–Europe and Pakistan–Europe routes have shown pockets of steady demand, encouraging carriers to recalibrate rates in line with capacity deployment and cost recovery.
Exporters and logistics providers cautioned that the higher tariffs could add pressure to supply chains for products such as textiles, chemicals, engineering goods and agricultural cargoes, particularly for spot bookings and short-duration contracts. Some shippers are already exploring alternative routing or shipment schedules to soften the impact of rising freight costs.
Hapag-Lloyd said the increase is intended to support service consistency and operational efficiency across its network. Industry analysts added that future rate direction on the corridor will hinge on demand patterns, carriers’ capacity management strategies and broader shifts in global trade and shipping conditions.
