Mundra port handles first export of hi-tech locomotives to Guinea
Mundra Port, India’s largest commercial port and the flagship of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), has successfully managed the first-ever export of advanced locomotives to Morebaya, Guinea, in West Africa. The milestone showcases the strength of Indian manufacturing, modern logistics, and the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
The maiden shipment comprised four state-of-the-art locomotives manufactured at Wabtec Locomotive Pvt Ltd’s facility in Marhowrah, Bihar. They were dispatched aboard the vessel MV BBC Washington. This consignment marks the start of a larger project under which Wabtec Corporation, the Pittsburgh-based global leader in rail and transit solutions, will export 150 locomotives through Mundra Port.
Bogie Conversion at Port
The locomotives are designed for standard gauge (1.435 metres) operations to meet overseas requirements. Since they are transported from Bihar on India’s broad-gauge network, APSEZ carried out a meticulous bogie conversion at its Agri Park rail siding in Mundra. The operation involved heavy-duty cranes, hydraulic trailers, and precise inspection before the cargo was safely loaded onto the vessel.
“This highly technical process highlights Mundra Port’s unique ability to handle complex, high-value industrial shipments and reflects APSEZ’s commitment to world-class service standards,” an APSEZ official said.
Boost to India’s Global Rail Exports
Exports will continue at the pace of one to two locomotives per month, positioning India as a reliable partner in global rail equipment supply while supporting domestic manufacturing under Atmanirbhar Bharat. Industry experts noted that the initiative demonstrates the strength of India’s integrated supply chain—from Bihar’s production hubs to Gujarat’s world-class port facilities. By exporting advanced locomotives, India is sending a strong signal that its engineering capabilities and logistics infrastructure are ready to compete globally.
