Nhava Sheva Deploys Relief Measures to Counter Middle East Shipping Chaos

‍

Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), also known as Nhava Sheva, has rolled out targeted interventions to alleviate container pile-ups and trade snarls triggered by Middle East conflicts, including waived fees and streamlined “Back to Town” (BTT) protocols for stranded exports. These steps aim to decongest yards holding up to 38,000 TEUs amid vessel delays and suspended Gulf sailings.
JNPA has cut stranded volumes from 5,000 to 3,200 TEUs since early March through a dedicated task force led by Chief General Manager Girish Thomas as the Single Point of Contact (SPOC). Measures include temporary transshipment storage, priority for perishables, ad-hoc berthings at eastern Hormuz ports like Fujairah and Muscat, and expedited BTT without Export General Manifest (EGM) filings.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Custom House (JNCH) eased BTT rules, allowing cargo retrieval via e-seal checks at Container Parking Plazas (CPP) and limited inspections at Container Freight Stations (CFS), with penalties waived. This supports exporters facing erratic schedules from lines suspending Middle East bookings, as 18 vessels anchor offshore with 1.9-day waits and 60% terminal occupancy.
West Asia flare-ups have rerouted ships, spiking congestion at JNPA’s terminals like NSICT and BMCT, mirroring issues at Mundra and Kandla. JNPA coordinates with customs, terminals, and stakeholders per Ministry of Ports SOPs, prioritizing reefer power for sensitive goods.
Industry bodies praise the moves for freeing capital and space, urging pass-through of benefits by carriers. As India grapples with $100B Gulf trade risks, Nhava Sheva’s agility—handling 5M+ TEUs yearly—bolsters resilience. Ongoing consultations promise further tweaks, like rail boosts, to sustain export flows.
