U.S.-China trade truce extension: Why compliance teams can’t wait until January for still-expiring Section 301 exclusions
On September 27 and 28, the White House, the U.S. Trade Representative, and China’s Ministry of Commerce published reciprocal tariff-relief lists as part of a new “30-for-30” framework, the first deliverable from the U.S.-China Board of Trade that Presidents Trump and Xi chartered at their May 2026 Beijing summit. Following Xi’s state visit in late September, Treasury announced a two-month extension of the broader tariff truce, originally struck in Busan in October 2025 and set to expire November 10, 2026, pushing the new deadline to January 10, 2027. As of this writing, that extension hasn’t been formally documented through an executive order or Federal Register notice.
That’s the headline. Here’s what it leaves out: three separate U.S. measures lapse on November 9 and 10, 2026, two months before the truce even ends, and nothing on the record extends them.
