India Reviews Export Import Logistics Amid Global Trade Uncertainty

The Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, recently conducted a high-level consultation to evaluate the potential impact of emerging geopolitical developments and global trade uncertainties on India’s export-import (EXIM) cargo flows and the export ecosystem.
The meeting brought together representatives from key ministries, trade facilitation partners, logistics operators, shipping lines, freight forwarders, and members of the export promotion ecosystem to ensure continuity and resilience in trade operations.
Discussions focused on operational challenges, including changes in vessel schedules, transit times, and container and equipment availability. Trends in freight and insurance costs were reviewed, along with their implications for time-sensitive exports such as perishables, pharmaceuticals, and high-value manufactured goods. Participants emphasised maintaining predictability in cargo movement and ensuring smooth documentation and payment processes for exporters and importers.
Data from the Logistics Data Bank (LDB), which tracks container movements across India’s ports and inland logistics network, indicates that more than 75 million EXIM containers have been monitored through the system. The platform provides real-time tracking of shipments, improving supply chain visibility and contributing to more efficient cargo management across seaports, inland container depots, and freight stations.
The consultation reaffirmed that maintaining uninterrupted EXIM logistics is a key government priority. A coordinated and facilitative approach will continue to support supply chain resilience and protect the interests of exporters, particularly micro, small, and medium enterprises. Ensuring that essential imports required for domestic production and consumption are not disrupted was also highlighted.
Participants agreed on the importance of real-time coordination on shipping routes, port capacities, freight surcharges, and equipment availability. Measures to facilitate time-critical exports and strengthen cargo handling at ports and inland container depots to prevent congestion and extended dwell times were also discussed.
The government confirmed its readiness to provide procedural flexibility in export authorisations during genuine disruptions, coordinate with Customs for smoother clearance, and work with financial and insurance institutions to support exporters.
Continued engagement with ministries and stakeholders aims to ensure that India’s trade operations remain efficient, resilient, and responsive to evolving global conditions.
