Sri Lanka gross forex earnings $2.5bn in August 2025, exceeds imports by $824mn

Sri Lanka gross forex earnings from exports, remittances and services totalled 1,521 million US dollars in August 2025, central bank data show, exceeding imports by 824 million US dollars.
Export earnings were 1,282 million US dollars, remittances (labour exports) were 680.3 million US dollars and gross services income was 557 million dollars.
Of that 258 million dollars were estimated to have come from tourism, and 71.8 million dollars from computer and IT services.
Travel abroad was 75.3 million US dollars. Up to August travel abroad was 503 million US dollars.
Imports were 1,696 million US dollars, down from 1882 million in July. Both merchandise exports and services income were down.
If there are no inflationary open market operations, outflows have to match imports subject to the timing differences in turning savings to credit.
In August Sri Lanka also spent 225 million dollars paying dividends on investments and interest.
Gross foreign exchange earnings to August is 18,992 million dollars. Imports were 13,441 million US dollars.
