CECT third berth operations boost Colombo Port capacity, trade efficiency

The commencement of operations at Berth Number III of the Colombo East Container Terminal (CECT) marks a significant step in expanding the Port of Colombo’s cargo-handling capacity and strengthening Sri Lanka’s position in regional and global maritime trade, industry officials said.
The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) began operations at the new berth on Friday, bringing 1,090 metres of the terminal’s planned 1,300-metre quay length into full operation. With 82 per cent of the remaining construction work completed, the terminal can now accommodate three container vessels simultaneously, reducing vessel turnaround times and improving overall port productivity. Port officials noted that the enhanced capacity is expected to support higher transshipment volumes, improve service reliability for global shipping lines, and generate increased revenue for the port and the wider economy. The inauguration of the third berth was marked by the arrival of MV Lila Mombasa of the CMA CGM Line, signalling strong confidence from international carriers.
In 2025, the Colombo East Container Terminal handled over 500,000 TEUs, reflecting rising demand for Colombo as a strategic transshipment hub in the Indian Ocean. Upon full completion, the terminal is expected to handle up to 1.5 million TEUs by the end of this year, representing half of its total designed capacity. This expansion is expected to play a critical role in capturing increased regional cargo flows, particularly from the Indian subcontinent.
Economists and industry analysts point out that higher container throughput directly contributes to foreign exchange earnings, port-related employment, logistics sector growth, and downstream services including shipping, warehousing, and freight forwarding. Improved terminal efficiency also enhances Sri Lanka’s attractiveness as a cost-effective and reliable logistics hub, supporting export competitiveness.
SLPA officials reiterated that the development of the CECT aligns with the Authority’s broader strategy to modernise port infrastructure, improve operational performance, and respond to growing global trade volumes. The project is expected to strengthen the Port of Colombo’s standing among competing regional ports, while contributing to sustainable economic growth and national development.
