Colombo Port records highest-ever container volume in 2025
The Port of Colombo celebrated a historic milestone yesterday, marking its highest-ever container throughput.
In 2025, the port handled a staggering 8,291,178 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), a 6% increase from the 7.79 million TEUs recorded in 2024.
The achievement was driven by the combined performance of four major terminals: the state-run JCT and ECT, the Chinese-managed SAGT, and the Adani-backed CICT.
The growth reinforces Colombo’s status as the preeminent transshipment hub in South Asia, particularly as global shipping routes adjusted following the Red Sea crisis.
Full operations at the East Container Terminal (ECT) and Phase 2 of the West Container Terminal (WCT) are expected by late 2026, targeting an ultimate port capacity of 15 million TEUs.
