'Less than container load' cargo creates congestion at Bangladesh port
The Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) recently requested the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) to expedite the delivery of ‘less than container load’ (LCL) cargo stored at container freight stations and sheds amid congestion at the port.
The congestion has raised pressure on port operations, port officials were cited as saying by domestic media outlets.
A letter sent to both the trade bodies mentioned that 14 container freight stations are filled with LCL cargo at present.
Most goods in this sector are imported by member companies of BGMEA and BKMEA.
There is insufficient space now to unload and store LCL cargo from approximately 780 TEUs of containers awaiting unstuffing.
To facilitate delivery, container freight station operations have been extended to run 24/7, including weekends and public holidays.
